A class of two-degree of freedom Hamiltonian systems with perturbations is considered. The main theorem proves a constructive method that can be used to verify whether the stable and unstable manifolds of two periodic orbits in a resonance band intersect transversely inside the corresponding level surface of the Hamiltonian. It is shown that the corresponding Melnilov function can be computed at the resonance in closed form. An example is considered and the results are applied for the extension to several degrees of freedom Hamiltonian systems.
