The author discusses the limits and rates of convergence of a domain decomposition algorithm to solve symmetric indefinite linear systems arising from certain mixed finite element discretizations of elliptic boundary value problems. The implementation of the Schwarz alternating and iterative refinement method were discussed in part I [ibid. 65, No. 4, 445-468 (1993; reviewed above)]. The discussion includes a stability analysis of mixed discretizations on locally refined grids and quantitative estimates for the rates of convergence.
