This paper discusses a method to improve the estimator of failure rates with incomplete (`masked') data in life tests for multi-component systems. After describing the general model with masked data, the author presents a procedure, which improves the accuracy of the estimator of the reliabilities of components. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for the Usher-Hodgson's estimators, a generalization of Miyakawa's MLE, to be the MLEs, and that Miyakawa-Usher-Hodgson-Guess' estimators are inconsistent in the Guess' model are given.
