The paper deals with the transcendence and algebraic independence of continued fractions, when certain growth conditions hold. The proofs use approximation properties of continued fractions, Roth's theorem concerning transcendental numbers and Bundschuh's theorem concerning the algebraic independence of limits of sequences.
