Even order formally self-adjoint scalar difference equations are studied. Positive definiteness of an associated quadratic functional is shown to imply \((n,n)\)-disconjugacy. This study is motivated by the open question of existence of a roundabout theorem of \textit{W. T. Reid} [Pac. J. Math. 6, 733--751 (1956; Zbl 0071.30203)] for singular discrete linear Hamiltonian systems.
