This paper concerns a comparison between linear multistep, Runge-Kutta and extrapolation methods within their respective classes. The unified way of comparing efficiency makes it possible to assess theoretically the relative efficiencies of methods from the different classes. The last part of the paper contains results for many of the most popular methods.
