    The author uses the method of compensated compactness to prove that the quasilinear hyperbolic initial-boundary value problem \[ \begin{alignedat}{3} u_ t- \sigma(v)_ x &= g_ 1(\cdot, u,v), \quad &v_ t- u_ x &= g_ 2 (\cdot, u,v), \quad &&a<x<b,\;t>0,\\ u(0,x) &= u_ 0(x), \quad &u_ t (0,x) &= v_ 0(x), \quad &&a<x<b \end{alignedat} \] to the boundary conditions \[ (1- \delta(a)) u(\cdot, a)+ \delta(a) \sigma(v(\cdot, a))=0, \qquad (1- \delta(b)) u(\cdot, b)+ \delta(b) \sigma(v(\cdot, b))=0 \] with \(\delta(a), \delta(b)\in \{0,1\}\), or to the dissipative boundary conditions \[ r(a) u(\cdot, a)- \sigma(v( \cdot,a))=0, \qquad r(b) u(\cdot,b)+ \sigma(v (\cdot, b))=0 \] with \(r(a), r(b)\geq 0\) has a weak solution for large initial data, which is contained in \(L^ \infty ([0,T]\times [a,b])\) for every \(T>0\). To formulate the initial and boundary conditions it is necessary to show that the solution \((u,v)\) has traces on the boundary of \([0,\infty)\times [a,b]\), and the author proves that weak solutions of this quasilinear system contained in \(L^ \infty ([0,T] \times [a,b])\) do have such traces.
