Several nonlinear problems which are defined on a semi-infinite interval or can be transformed into one are presented. The authors show that these problems, with apparently significantly different nonlinearities, share several similar features. These features can be utilized in both establishing the existence and uniqueness of solutions and in deriving good numerical approximations. Specially, this paper discusses how four nonlinear problems on a semi- infinite interval are studied by conversion to initial value problems.
