The paper is concerned with the linear theory of classical elastostatics for an isotropic and homogeneous half-space. The authors prove that the stresses due to an arbitrary dislocation may be expressed as a line integral around that dislocation. For the special case of a dislocation half-line the integral is evaluated analytically, yielding the stresses in closed form. The results are applied to the study of the energies of dislocation loops in strained layers. It is shown that simple correction factors may be determined to yield exact results. The correction terms are evaluated for a square loop buried in a half-space and for rectangular and semicircular surface half-space.
