Within the class of `general linear methods' for the numerical solution of initial value problems \(y'= f(y)\) those having a diagonally implicit structure (DIMSIM) are considered. In this article a similarity transformation for the occurring matrices of the method is proposed which considerably simplifies the stability analysis of the methods. Its usefulness for the construction of \(A\)-stable methods is demonstrated.
