Let \(S \subset \mathbb{P}^ n\) be a smooth complex properly elliptic algebraic surface. I prove that for the degree \(d\) and the class \(m\) of \(S\) the inequality \(m - 3d \geq 6\) holds and characterize the surfaces satisfying the corresponding equality. This result relies on the recent progress in the understanding of elliptic surfaces with \(\chi ({\mathcal O}_ S) = 0\) with \(\mathbb{P}^ 1\) or an elliptic curve as base curve, due to Serrano and Fujita respectively, and improves considerably an inequality I obtained 10 years ago [the author, Arch. Math. 45, 79-85 (1985; Zbl 0557.14018)]. As an application, smooth projective surfaces with class \(m \leq 3d + 6\) are classified. Finally I discuss a related problem concerning the very ampleness of the line bundle \(\eta^* H_ 0 - [\eta^{-1} (p)]\) on a surface \(S\) obtained by blowing-up at a point \(p\) a minimal surface \(S_ 0\) of Kodaira dimension 0 polarized by a very ample line bundle \(H_ 0\), where \(\eta : S \to S_ 0\) denotes the blowing-up.
