The author attempts to apply additive category theory to ring theory rather than to generalize ring theory to additive categories. One of his purposes is to analyse the radical of an additive category in more detail and to investigate its relation to a notion of semisimple additive category. He proves, for example, that an Artinian additive category is (semi)simple iff it is Morita equivalent to a division ring(oid). He also provides a characterization of semiprimitive additive categories (that is, those with zero radical) in terms of a categorical concept called Noether fullness.
