The transient behavior of a viscous layer on a curved substrate is investigated. Under the assumptions that the layer is thin, the motion is slow, and the free surfce is almost parallel to the substrate, a single nonlinear partial differential equation for the layer thickness is derived. Substrates with piecewise constant curvature are considered in detail. A linearized problem is solved analytically while the full nonlinear equation is analyzed numerically.
