An effective procedure is given to decide if a system of equations in a (torsion-free) hyperbolic group has a solution. The proof uses canonical representatives in hyperbolic groups. The authors have applied this method already (separately) for other purposes, e.g. for the solution of the isomorphism problem for (torsion-free) hyperbolic groups.
