The paper proves a semipositivity result for direct images of certain vector bundles. It uses \(p\)-adic methods instead of classical Hodge theory. The main idea used is that for a very ample line bundle \(L\) on a curve \(S\), one can find coverings \(S' \to S\) such that the space of global sections of \(L\) on \(S'\) becomes arbitrarily big. On the other hand, for locally constant sheaves the dimension of the space of global sections is universally bounded. Then one relates two such spaces via \(p\)-adic Hodge theory.
