Let \(\Gamma_d\) be the set of all smooth hypersurfaces \(V\) in \(\mathbb{P}^{n +1}\) \((n\geq 3)\) of degree \(d\geq n+3\) which have a divisor \(M\) with geometric genus \(p_g(M) < {d-2\choose n+1} - {d-2-k \choose n+k}\), where \(M=V \cap V_1\) and \(k\) is the degree of \(V_1\). We show that every component of \(\Gamma_d\) has codimension \(\geq n\) in \(\mathbb{P} H^0 (\mathbb{P}^{n+1}, {\mathcal O} (d))\). Using intersection theory, we obtain a similar result for smooth surfaces in \(\mathbb{P}^3\). We also give a classification about the singularities of hyperplane sections of a generic hypersurface in \(\mathbb{P}^4\).
