In 1993, the authors had initiated a study of the homotopy theory of pointed simplicial spaces. In this paper they further develop this theory by introducing the `bigraded homotopy groups' of a pointed simplicial space and observe that these groups behave very much like the ordinary homotopy groups of a pointed space. These homotopy groups give a simple geometric interpretation of the filtration on the homotopy of the realization of a simplicial space provided by the usual homotopy spectral sequence.
