Let \(X\) be a compact Riemann surface. A stable triple \((E_1, E_2, f)\) on \(X\) is given by holomorphic vector bundles \(E_1\), \(E_2\) on \(X\) and \(f \in H^0 (X, \Hom (E_1, E_2))\). Fix \(\tau \in \mathbb{R}\). Here the authors define and study the notion of \(\tau\)-stability for the triples and the dependency of stability from the parameter \(\tau\). A stable triple is simple and indecomposable. Previously the authors proved that the dimensional reduction of the Hermitian-Einstein equations gives the vortex equation and the stable SU(2)-equivariant bundles on \(X \times \mathbb{P}^1\) correspond (by dimensional reduction) to \(\tau\)-stables pairs \((E_1, {\mathcal O}_X, f)\). In this paper in the general setting of \(\tau\)-stable triples the authors obtain a similar correspondence with 2 coupled \(\tau\)-vortex equations: the triple \((E_1, E_2,f)\) is \(\tau\)-polystable if and only if there are Hermitian metrics \(h_i\) on \(E_i\), \(i = 1,2\), such that the associated coupled \(\tau\)-vortex equations are satisfied.
