The author studies two-dimensional motion of a cylinder in a viscous fluid between two parallel walls of a vertical channel. Two numerical methods are used. One is employed to describe the unsteady motion of a sedimenting cylinder initially starting from a position close to one of the channel walls. The Navier-Stokes equations for the flow together with Newton's equations of the motion for the cylinder are solved. The other method describes the flow in which the cylinder is moving with constant velocity in a fluid at rest. It is found that when the cylinder moves very closely to one of the channel walls, it always rotates. When the cylinder is away from the walls, it still rotates, and the rotation velocity depends on the Reynolds number.
