In connection with problems of quantum mechanics, the authors consider here a subalgebra of the classical pseudo-differential operators, with matrix-valued symbol. Such a subalgebra, in \(3+ 1\) dimensions, can be characterized by suitable relations involving the principal symbol \(a_0\) and the \(a_{-1}\) term, \(a_k\) being arbitrary for \(k\leq - 2\). The authors deduce from them a relevant identity, namely in the language of quantum field theory and current algebras: the Schwinger term is equivalent to the twisted Radul cocycle, a modified version of the Radul cocycle arising in non-commutative differential geometry, cf. \textit{J. Mickelsson} [Current algebras and groups, Plenum Press, New York (1989; Zbl 0726.22015)].
