The solution of index 2 Euler Lagrange differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) with nonlinear constraints, which occur in the simulation of multibody dynamics, by multistep methods is investigated. The class of feasible methods is extended by using compound methods, which consist of a method not satisfying the strict root condition to the given index 2 problem combined with a suitable stabilizing difference correction to the Lagrangian variables (\(\beta\)-blocking). The convergence and the order behaviour of such methods for constant stepsizes are proved. Special considerations are devoted to the difference corrected backward differentiation formulae methods and the \(\beta\)-blocked Adams method. The theoretical results are verified by computations of a sufficiently complex problem.
