The authors consider the finite nonperiodic Toda lattice hierarchy \[ {\partial \over \partial t_n} L = [B_n, L], \quad n = 1,2,\dots,\tag{1} \] where \(L\) is an arbitrary symmetric matrix and \(B_n\) is the skew symmetric matrix given by \(B_n = (L^n)_{>0} - (L^n)_{<0}\). In this paper, the authors give an explicit formula for the solution to the initial value problem of (1), and show that the sorting property also holds in this case. The integration formula is obtained by the orthogonalization procedure of Szegö, and is also interpreted as a consequence of the QR factorization method of Symes.
