Higher homotopies of natural constructions (Q1917381): Difference between revisions

Any functorial change introduced in lower dimensions of a space must have a similar influence on higher dimensions. The paper considers homotopy properties of functors \(F\) from spaces to spaces (e.g. localization functors and other natural constructions). Let \(F\) be a continuous (i.e. \(\text{map} (X,Y) \to \text{map} (FX, FY)\) is a continuous function), co-augmented \((X \to FX)\), homotopy idempotent (only for a best formulation) functor. As an example one has that if \(F\{0,1\}\) is a connected space then \(FX\) is a contractible space for all \(X\). The main result says that, for any cofibration \(\varphi : A \to B\), if \(\text{map} ( \varphi,FX) : \text{map} (B,FX) \to \text{map} (A,FX)\) is a 1-to-1 map on \(\pi_0\) for \(X= B\) and a surjective map on \(\pi_0\) for \(X = A\), then it is a homotopy equivalence for every space \(X\). Weaker formulations give interesting corollaries. As illustration, examples are offered.
