A specialized model for hybrid control system analysis and design purposes is presented. The model describes a system of a certain class of continuous plants, discrete event controllers and interfaces which convert continuous-time signals to sequences of control symbols and vice versa. In general, the model depends on the plant to be controlled, on the control policies available and on the set of goals to be attained. The proposed formal model is general: it is usable to obtain discrete event controllers for a wide class of plants with continuous dynamics. A presentation with simulations and examples illustrates the application of the model and the basic tools from classical control theory and the theory of finite automata to the controller design for hybrid systems.
