The stable manifold theorem is proved in the context of hyperbolic fixed points of smooth relations \(f\subset Z\times Z\) on a smooth manifold \(Z\). When applied to the standard case of smooth mappings on a manifold this procedure produces an illustrative way to look at the stable and unstable manifolds as the limit of the graphs of the iterates of the map. As such the paper certainly has pedagogical value.
