The authors use an energy method to deduce the spatial growth or decay (exponentially) of solutions to a generalized heat conduction problem for a semi-infinite cylindrical region. The equations used to model heat conduction at low temperature are: \[ \tau u_{i,t}= -u_i-\kappa T_{,i}+\mu\Delta u_i+\nu u_{j,ji}, \qquad cT_{,t}=-u_{i,i}, \] where comma denotes differentiation and the summation convention on \(i\) and \(j\) is used. Here \(\tau\), \(\kappa\), \(\mu\), \(\nu\), and \(c\) are positive constants and \(u_i\) denote the components of the heat flux and \(T\) the temperature. Initial conditions (zero) are prescribed on \(u_i\) and \(T\) and Dirichlet type boundary conditions are imposed on \(u_i\) (homogeneous on the lateral surface). A bound for the energy function at the finite end of the cylinder and the effect of a small perturbation of the parameter \(\mu\) on the decay are also obtained.
