A commutative ring \(A\) is \(t\)-closed if for all \(x,y,r\in A\) with \(x^3+rxy-y^2\) there exists \(z\in A\) such that \(x=z^2-rz\), \(y=z^3- rz^2\). Obviously every \(t\)-closed ring is seminormal (i.e. satisfies the condition for \(r=0\)). One calls \(A\) totally \(t\)-closed (TTC) if for every ring homomorphism \(f:B\to A\) and every infra-integral homomorphism \(g:B\to C\) there exists a homomorphism \(h:C\to A\) with \(f=h\circ g\). (An injective homomorphism is said to be infra-integral if it is integral with isomorphic residual extensions.) The definition of a TTC ring is similar to that of a totally integrally closed ring [\textit{M. Hochster}, Pac. J. Math. 32, 767-779 (1970; Zbl 0192.38502)]. It is shown that an integral domain is TTC if and only if it is \(t\)-closed. One of the main results of the paper is that a ring \(A\) is TTC if and only if it is a Baer \(t\)-closed ring. (In a Baer ring the annihilator of an arbitrary ideal is generated by an idempotent.) For a reduced ring \(A\) the author constructs a tight infra-integral ring homomorphism \(A\to T(A)\) with \(T(A)\) closed; \(T(A)\) is called the total \(T\)-closure of \(A\). (A homomorphism \(f:A\to B\) is tight if \(g\circ f\) injective implies \(g\) injective for every homomorphism \(g:B\to C\).) In the last part of the paper the behaviour of the property TTC under ring extensions is studied.
