Finite difference schemes for the numerical solution of linear advection equations in two and three space dimensions are analyzed. Conditions on the coefficients of the discretization scheme are derived in order that the scheme is \(p\)th order accurate in space and time. Furthermore a methodology is developed to indicate the stability properties of the schemes under consideration.
