Let \(T\) be a homeomorphism of a metrizable compact space \(X\) and let \(c_k\) be a sequence such that \(c_k\to\infty\) but \((c_k/k)\to 0\). The authors investigate the limits of the ergodic sums \((1/c_k)\sum_{i=1}^k fT^i\) and apply their results to irrational rotations of the circle. In particular, they separately investigate the cases when the irrational number has unbounded partial quotients and when it has bounded partial quotients.
