The authors propose an integral proof of Cauchy's (1841) mean rotation theory that is less restrictive than a previous one given by \textit{Q.-S. Zheng} and \textit{K. C. Hwang} [J. Appl. Mech. 59, No. 2, pt. 1, 405-410 (1992; Zbl 0761.73017)]. The mean rotation is described by an integral equation, singular points of which are discussed. The result may be of interest in the analysis of finite deformation and finite rotation problems.
