The authors use a micromechanical model to study the nonlinear behavior of fiber reinforced ceramics on the basis of micromechanical-statistical material description. The microstructure is modelled by a suitable number of substructures, based on the properties of individual phases and their interactions. The numerical access in the model is accomplished by the finite element method. The model is tested on the example of unidirectional fiber reinforced SiC composites. In the numerical simulations, the authors describe the statistically verified events of damage in the microstructure. Finally, the effects of important parameters like the fiber number, the fiber-matrix friction, and the fiber Weibull parameter on the nonlinear behavior of the microstructure are examined.
