\textit{A. Uhlmann} [Math. Phys. Stud. 13, 267-274 (1992; Zbl 0871.46042)] introduced a Riemannian metric on the space of normalized density matrices. Let \({\mathcal D}_{nk} \subset {\mathcal M}_{nn} (C)\) denote the space of normalized \(n\times n\) density matrices of rank \(k\). The paper gives a negative answer to the following problem: Does there exist a manifold \(M\) of dimension \(n^2-1\), \((n>2)\), which contains \(\cup^n_{k=1} {\mathcal D}_{nk}\) as a topological subspace, such that \({\mathcal D}_{nk}\), \(k=1, \dots,n\), is isometrically embedded? For \(n=2\) Uhlmann observed that the answer is positive.
