    Let \(\gamma\) and \(k\) be positive constants and \(A\) the ordinary differential operator \[ A=\left[ \begin{matrix} 0 & 1 & 0 \\ D^2 & 0 & -\gamma D \\ 0 & -\gamma D & kD^2 \end{matrix}\right], \quad D= {d\over dx} \] on the space \(H^1_0 (0,1)\times L^2(0,1) \times L^2 (0,1)\) with domain of definition \((H^2(0,1) \times H^1_0(0,1)) \times H^1_0(0,1) \times H^1_0 (0,1)\). The authors show that the spectrum of \(A\) consists of a real sequence \(\lambda_n\) and a sequence of conjugate pairs \(\sigma_n\), \(\overline {\sigma_n}\) \((n=1,2, \dots)\) of eigenvalues with asymptotic behavior \(\lambda_n= -(nk\pi)^2 +\gamma^2 +O(n^{-2})\) and \(\sigma_n =-{\gamma^2 \over 2}+ ink\pi +0(n^{-1})\) for \(n\to\infty\). Further, consequences to the asymptotic behavior of the solutions to an initial boundary value problem for the system \[ u_{tt}-u_{xx}+ \gamma v_x=0, \quad v_t+ \gamma u_{xt} -kv_{xx} =0\quad 0<x<1,\;t>0 \] are derived.
