A characterization of those elements \(w\) of a finite Weyl group is given whose reduced expressions avoid substrings of the form \(sts\) where \(s\) and \(t\) are noncommuting generators. For such \(w\), a criterion of smoothness of the corresponding Schubert variety is obtained.
