The author extends from compact to complete submanifolds \(M^n\) of a sphere \(S^{n+p}\) with parallel mean curvature \(H\) \((\neq 0)\) certain gap theorems obtained by \textit{H. Alencar} and \textit{M. P. do Carmo} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 120, 1223-1229 (1994; Zbl 0802.53017)] for the case \(p=1\) and by \textit{W. Santos} [Tôhoku Math. J., II. Ser. 46, 403-415 (1994; Zbl 0812.53053)] for arbitrary \(p\). No classification is obtained for the case where the upper bound of the gap is reached.
