Let \(W\) denote a finite, simply laced Weyl group, or the affine Weyl group \(E_9=\widehat E_8\). The authors show agreement of Lusztig's \(a\)-function with the \(a\)-function previously given by \textit{C. K. Fan} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 10, No. 1, 139-167 (1997; Zbl 0861.20042)].
