The Berezin transform is an operator which links the Berezin symbols and the symbols for Toeplitz operators. Berezin transforms play an important role in the theory of quantization. A Berezin transform is defined as follows. Let \(D\) be a domain in the \(n\)-dimensional complex space \({\mathbb{C}}^n\) and let \(\mathcal H\) be a closed subspace of \(L^2(D,d\mu)\) consisting of continuous functions. The Berezin symbol \(\sigma (A)\) of a bounded operator \(A\) on \(\mathcal H\) is a function on \(D\) given by \(\sigma (A)(z)= \text{tr} (AE_z)\). The Berezin transform \(B\) associated to \(\mathcal H\) is the positive selfadjoint operator \(\sigma \sigma^*\) which is a bounded operator on \(L^2(D, d\mu _0)\), \(d\mu _0=k(z,z)d\mu\). When \(\mathcal H\) carries a unitary representation \(\pi\) of a Lie algebra \(G\) acting on \(D\), the operator \(B\) commutes with the \(G\)-action, so that obtaining the spectral decomposition of \(B\) is a problem related to the representation theory of \(G\). The aim of the present paper is to establish the spectral decomposition of the Berezin transform on the space \(\text{Mat} (2,{\mathbb{C}})\) of complex \(2\times 2\) matrices related to the two-sided action of the group \(U(2)\times U(2)\). The eigenspaces are described explicitly by means of the matrix elements of a certain real analytical finite dimensional representation of the group \(GL(2,{\mathbb{C}})\). Each eigenvalue is expressed as a finite sum involving the Meijer \(G\)-functions calculated at the point 1 and the Hahn polynomials.
