    Let \(X\) be a Banach space. \(X\) is said to satisfy Opial's condition [\textit{Z. Opial}, Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 73, 591-597 (1967; Zbl 0179.19902)], if for each sequence \(\{x_n\}\) in \(X\), the condition \(x_n\to x_0\) weakly implies \(\varlimsup_n\| x_n- x_0\|< \varlimsup_n\| x_n- y\|\) for all \(y\) in \(X,y\neq x_0\). Also, \(X\) is said to have a Fréchet differentiable norm if for any \(x\in S(X)\), the unit sphere of \(X\), the limit \(\lim_{t\to 0} (\| x+ ty\|- \| x\|)/t\), exists and is attained uniformly in \(y\in Sx\). The main result of the paper is Theorem 1. Let \(X\) be a uniformly convex Banach space that satisfies the Opial condition or whose norm is Fréchet differentiable, \(C\) be a bounded closed convex subset of \(X\), and \(T: C\to C\) be a nonexpansive mapping. Then for any initial guess \(x_0\) in \(C\), the Ishikawa iteration process \(\{x_n\}\), defined by: \[ x_{n+ 1}= t_nT(s_n Tx_n+(1- s_n)x_n)+ (1- t_n)x_n,\quad n= 0,1,2,\dots \] with the restriction that \(\varlimsup_n s_n\) is less than 1 and for any subsequences \(\{n_k\}^\infty_{k=0}\) of \(\{n\}^\infty_{n= 0}\), \(\sum^\infty_{k= 0} t_{n_k}(1- t_{n_k})\) diverges, converges weakly to a fixed point of \(T\). Such a result complements Theorem 1 of [\textit{K. K. Tan} and \textit{H. K. Xu}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 178, No. 2, 301-308 (1993; Zbl 0895.47048)] and generalizes Theorem 2 of [\textit{S. Reich}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 67, 274-276 (1979; Zbl 0423.47026)].
