A generic Hankel matrix is matrix \(X(x_{ij})\) whose entries \(x_{ij}=X_{i+j-1}\) are indeterminates over a field. Let \(I_t\) denote the ideal generated by the \(t\)-minors of \(X\) in the corresponding polynomial ring \(R=K [X_1,\dots,X_n]\). By results of Eisenbud and J. Watanabe \(R/I_t\) is a normal Cohen-Macaulay domain. The author develops an elegant standard monomial theory for \(R\) in terms of the maximal minors of the various Hankel matrices that can be formed for the family \(X_1,\dots,X_n\). Though \(R\) is not an ASL with respect to these standard monomials, one can control the situation through Gröbner basis theory. -- The standard monomial theory is used in order to describe the symbolic powers of the ideals \(I_t\) and the primary decomposition of their ordinary powers. They are similar to the corresponding results for generic or symmetric matrices of indeterminates. Finally the symbolic and the ordinary Rees algebra of the ideals are studied. They turn out to be normal Cohen-Macaulay domains. Moreover, the defining ideal of the ordinary Rees algebra has a quadratic Gröbner basis.
