The LMS after its first two years developed Continental contacts under Sylvester and Cayley; Thomas Hirst influenced the society to institute the category of foreign members. Establishment of a society library, the publication of the \textsl{Proceedings}, interaction with established and emerging foreign societies in France, Palermo, and America cemented the society's place. The society ran into the common problem of its applied mathematical members publishing their papers elsewhere. The eponymous medal was established to honour De Morgan, and awarded every three years, with one foreigner (Klein) among its first six recipients. Charlotte Scott became the first female member in 1881, followed by the first woman with a doctorate from University of London, Sophie Bryant. The society was incorporated in the 1890s. A list of presidents is given, and there are 43 references.
