A general scheme for quantization, in the spirit of Berezin, on para-Hermitian symmetric spaces has recently been set forth by the second author [Transl., Ser. 2, Am. Math. Soc. 175(31), 81-95 (1996; Zbl 0879.53040)]. In the paper under review and also in the accompanying paper of the authors [J. Math. Pures Appl., IX. Sér. 78, No. 1, 99-119 (1999; Zbl 0919.43010)] this program is carried out in detail in the simplest case of rank one para-Hermitian symmetric spaces, viz. \(X=\)SL\((n,\mathbb R)/\)GL\((n-1,\mathbb R)\equiv G/H\). The authors first develop the standard fundamentals of the harmonic analysis on the non-Riemannian symmetric space \(G/H\), i.e. the Laplace-Beltrami operator, its spectral decomposition, the irreducible unitary representations of \(G\) associated with \(G/H\), the spherical functions on \(G/H\) and the Plancherel formula. Then the corresponding Berezin transform (or Berezin form) \(\mathcal B_{\mu,\nu}\) is introduced, which in this context depends on two parameters \(\mu\in\mathbb R\) and \(\nu=0,1\) and is not positive definite in general; and its spectral decomposition is obtained, which exhibits \(\mathcal B_{\mu,\nu}\) as a function of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. For values \(\mu<\frac{1-n}2\) the decomposition of \(\mathcal B_{\mu,\nu}\) contains the same irreducible components as \(L^2(X)\), but the Plancherel measure is not necessarily positive. For \(\mu>\frac{1-n}2\) a finite number of irreducible components belonging to the (non-unitary) complementary series must be added. Finally, the behaviour of \(\mathcal B_{\mu,\nu}\) as \(\mu\to-\infty\) is investigated, which corresponds to the passage to the classical limit \(h\to 0\) in quantization (the Planck constant is \(h=-\frac 1\mu\)), and it turns out that the correspondence principle holds on the discrete spectrum if \(n\) is even.
