Let \(R\) be a commutative noetherian ring and \(\varphi:R^n\to R^m\) an \(R\)-module homomorphism. The authors give a new upper bound for the degrees of the nonvanishing homology modules of the Schur complex \(L_\lambda\varphi\) in terms of a partition \(\lambda= (\lambda_1,\lambda_2, \dots)\) and of the depths of the determinantal ideals of \(\varphi\). The obtained result is an improvement of a previous result of the authors [\textit{I. A. Manji} and \textit{R. Sánchez}, J. Algebra 182, No. 1, 274-286 (1996; Zbl 0873.13011)] and is in the form of a combinatorial game played on the diagram of \(\lambda\). More precisely, suppose \((t_1,t_2,\dots)\) is a sequence of nonnegative integers satisfying \(t_i-t_{j-1} \leq\lambda_j\), and depth \(I_j \varphi\geq t_{n-j+1}\) for \(j=1, \dots,n\), then \(H_q(L_\lambda \varphi)=0\) whenever \(q>\lambda_1+ \cdots+ \lambda_n-t_n\).
