This reprint of [\textit{P. Kustaanheimo} and \textit{B. Qvist}, Comment. Phys.-Math., Soc. Sci. Fennica 13, No. 16, 1-11 (1948; Zbl 0030.28202)] is accompanied by an introduction by Andrzej Krasiński and brief biographies of the authors. The authors' results cover the reduction of the Einstein equations for spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions with zero shear in the nonstatic case to a single ODE and classify its solutions. Their results were rediscovered numerous times and this reprint attempts to ``channel future research in a more fruitful direction''.
