The author investigates the smoothness of radial positive definite functions on \({\mathcal R}^d\) which are \(2k\) times differentiable at zero. He proves a conjecture of Paul Switzer and relates to smoothness measures for stationary and isotropic random fields. The techniques used have been evolved in geostatistics.
