In contrast to earlier investigations for determining families of equivariant functions for a few of the discrete symmetry groups in the plane, the authors present a method which allows to create chaotic attractors that are forced to have any of the discrete symmetry groups of the plane. This is based on choosing a family of maps in the plane, randomly choosing the coefficients for the terms as parameters and testing whether the Lyapunov exponent provides chaotic behaviour. Images of these attractors often have a striking appearance when the Lyapunov exponent is positive and thus allows the construction of nice examples.
