It is shown that a finitely generated \(C^*\)-algebra admitting a presentation of infinite or nonintegral Gelfand-Kirillov dimension has free subalgebras, and that a \(C^*\)-algebra having a finite monomial presentation of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension does not have free subalgebras. Further, it is shown that a \(C^*\)-algebra having a presentation of linear growth can be imbedded in the algebra of \(n\times n\) matrices over a commutative \(C^*\)-algebra for some \(n\in{\mathbb{N}}\), has completely polynomial sets of asymptotic growth, and does not have free subalgebras. Various related results are derived.
