In the paper under review, one constructs a \(F(S_{\theta})\)-functional calculus for \(C_0\)-groups of exponential growth on a Banach space, where \(F(S_{\theta})\) is a certain algebra of analytic functions on the sector \(S_{\theta}\) in the complex plane. This is shown to be a natural extension of the \(F(S_{\theta})\)-functional calculus for some sectorial operators with bounded imaginary powers [cf. \textit{J. Prüss} and \textit{H. Sohr}, Math. Z. 203, No. 3, 429-452 (1990; Zbl 0665.47015)]. For the \(F(S_{\theta})\)-functional calculus for sectorial operators, see also [\textit{A. McIntosh}, Miniconf. Ryde/Aust. 1986, Proc. Cent. Math. Anal. Aust. Natl. Univ. 14, 210-231 (1986; Zbl 0634.47016)]. The functional calculus for \(C_0\)-groups is defined by an integral formula similar to the one used in the case of Weyl calculus, the Fourier transform being replaced by the Mellin transform. The relation between the analytic generator of the \(C_0\)-group and the functional calculus is also analyzed. These methods are used to obtain an extension of the Dore-Venni theorem, the approach being inspired by a recent paper of \textit{S. Monniaux} [Math. Nachr. 204, 163-183 (1999; Zbl 0942.47001)]. Examples of Fourier and Schur multipliers are also presented, in each case considering the analytic generators.
