Let \(G\) be a \(p\)-group maximal class of order \(p^m\), where \(p\) is an odd prime and \(m\geq 4\). \textit{R.~Shepherd} has shown in his PhD Thesis [Univ. Chicago (1970)] that \(G\) has a maximal subgroup \(M\) of class less than \(p\). The correspondence of \textit{M.~Lazard} [Ann. Sci. Ec. Norm. Supér., III. Sér. 71, 101-190 (1954; Zbl 0055.25103)] allows one to define a Lie ring structure on \(M\), that carries the same information as the group structure. In the paper under review the authors employ this method to study certain features of \(G\). In particular, they are able to show that the entire structure of \(G\) is completely determined by the knowledge of \((p-3)/2\) commutators between the standard generators introduced by \textit{N.~Blackburn} [Acta Math. 100, 45-92 (1958; Zbl 0083.24802)], plus three more integer parameters. This extends work of \textit{C.~R.~Leedham-Green} and \textit{S.~McKay} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 29, 281-299 (1978; Zbl 0403.20013)].
