Grigorchuk constructed periodic 2-groups that are not locally finite. Grigorchuk posed the problem whether the growth function of these groups is \(e^{\sqrt n}\). In this paper it is given a negative answer to this question. Namely, for the Grigorchuk group \(G\), the estimate for the growth function \(\gamma_G(n)\geq e^{n^\alpha}\) holds, where \(\alpha=\log_{87/22}2>\tfrac 12\).
