The author proves a discrete inequality of Grüss type, with applications to discrete Fourier transforms, discrete Mellin transforms, to polynomials, as well as to Lipschitz mappings. We quote the following main result: Let \(H\) be a real or complex inner product space, let \(x_i\in H\), \(p_i\geq 0\), \(\sum^n_{i=1} p_i= 1\), \(a_i\in \mathbb{C}\) \((i= 1,2,\dots,n)\), \(n\geq 2\). If \(a,A\in \mathbb{C}\) and \(x,X\in H\) are such that \(\text{Re}[(A- a_i)(\overline a_i-\overline a)]\geq 0\), \(\text{Re}\langle X- x_i,x_i- x\rangle\geq 0\) \((i= 1,2,\dots, n)\), then \[ \Biggl\|\sum^n_{i=1} p_ia_ix_i- \sum^n_{i=1} p_ia_i\cdot \sum^n_{i=1} p_ix_i\Biggr\|\leq {1\over 4}|A-a|\cdot\|X- x\|, \] where the constant \({1\over 4}\) is sharp.
